If you google "telomere" here is what it says
A telomere is a region of repetitive DNA sequences at the end of a chromosome. Telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes from becoming frayed or tangled. Each time a cell divides, the telomeres become slightly shorter. Eventually, they become so short that the cell can no longer divide successfully, and the cell dies.
It is a big subject so I cut the long story short. What happens when telomere finally drops off - it's the end of the youth as the cell cannot divide to regenerate.
When I consult with my patients, I always try to explain as much as possible - what kind of skin care, what active ingredients that benefit their skin condition, what sunscreen, the fact of UV etc etc....- but I don't want to bombard with too much information. So, I barely go into this deep DNA level.
If you look at my bathroom cabinet, you will find millions of skin care products. I use them depending on what my skin wants and needs e.g. skin condition, weather, season, age etc
Tyrosinase inhibitor - Brightening serum
can be kojic acid, arbutin, hydroquinone, phytic acid, ascorbic acid etc which will inhibit melanin production improving skin pigmentation and brighten skin tone.
Vitamin C serum
stimulates collagen which improve skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C contained products which contain elastin are even better to improve elasticity.
Vitamin B complex serum
Vitamin B - especially B3 (Niacinamide) prevents your skin from UV, improve skin pigmentation, active acne, redness (such as rosacea).
Vitamin A serum (Retinol)
Will push old cells upwards stimulate skin turn over. Good anti ageing ingredients which improve wrinkles, skin texture and skin tone.
I use emepelle that contains retinol. These are my favourite and highly recommend for skin over 40 years old.
Hyaluronic Acid
Binds with water giving skin plumpness. Drinking enough water helps Hyaluronic acid absorb more water.
Anti Oxidant
Active ingredients that act as anti Oxidant will protect your skin from the harm of free radical. Free radical hurts nuclei and may be the cause of skin cancer as well as premature ageing.
What else...I can keep going but I'll stop now.
Well, all these goodies will be pointless to use if "telomere"'s tail drops off.
That's why I also use DNA repair/renewal serum which I heard is controversial. Well, I want to try everything that's available fight against ageing.
I had an opportunity to talk about it a little today at a consultation with my patient. I thought to share my knowledge just a little bit so that everyone visits here will learn the mystery of their skin and treat it the right way.
